A swim in November rain - with visitors from Cronulla

One Sunday in November 2013.
High tide, but also rain and chill wind.  Swimmers from Cronulla made a guest appearance at this meet, and set a high standard of speed and good cheer.

A little bit of winter never stops a competitive swimmer

 Races are underway.

It is warmer in the water than out, as a wind chill factor comes into play.

Between swims, we wrap up

The races continue, despite the chattering of teeth.

This meeting, combined with the Cronulla team, includes a relay.  The photos below are a record of powerful swimmers at their best.

Some informal handicapping

The race continues

The final leg of the relay

The winning team powers to the finish line.  And yes: Cronulla wins.

We treat our Cronulla guests to another of our distinctive races: Around the Baths (about 800m) or The Kilometre (about 1km).

The Kilometre is an informal measurement, being around the baths once plus the distance along the net end to end.

So, you start at other end of the pool, swim along the net, then take a hard right at the starting blocks.  Continue on, swimming a full circle around the pool and back to the starting end.

Those doing The Kilometre must walk down to the other end of the pool - and a very pretty bush walk it is - for the starting position, which is quite informal, and anywhere in the mud will do.  The starter, who is standing on the shore, signals the start of the race by dropping a white flag.

The Kilometre can be tough, and is a measure of personal achievement.  It is - by no means - a spectator sport.

A buoy marks the turning point.

Rounding the buoy and then off to swim a full circle of the baths.

A first to finish The Kilometre

Another fast finisher.

Fit people, eh?

Congratulations to Cronulla: winners of the relay trophy for 2013

First swim of the season...

John, Mathew and Ken declare the swimming season open.  Water temperature - they tell me - is 16 degrees, and warmer than the showers.

Barmedman weekend March 2013 - photos by Kerry

Three of our best - at Barmedman
Kerry's Report on the weekend:

We did do some swimming, there was lots of chat and laughter, eating and drinking
We played barefoot bowls while enjoying a beer under a beautiful sunset.
Lots of fun was had by all, kids and the big kids off the pontoon.
Lyn tried all weekend to finish her book, we had time out at a retro cafe in Temora (you can see me in the mirror taking the pic).

A starting moment...

FACE THE WATER...
(Photographer's note: Love this photo - not only for its edges of morning light - but how it captures the unique style of readiness held by each swimmer before leaping into the race.  Not one the same.)

GO!

These photos were taken 10 March 2013, around 9am.  I was trying to capture a dive, mid-air.

I'll keep trying, and if I succeed, I'll post the results here.

Winner of the Arthur Lartar trophy for juniors 2013

The winner of the Arthur Lartar trophy for juniors, 2013 - having swum her way through seriously contested heats, semi finals and finals.  Well done!

Meet our newest club member

Meet our newest and smallest club member.  Little blue eyed doll, posing with Emily, is wearing club swimmers made by Emily's grandmother, Wendy.

Wendy cut down an old pair of swimmers to size, and now little blue eyed doll can join the swimming club.

Blue eyed doll is the fourth generation of club members.  Wendy (a keen non-swimmer and wife of Alan, one of our champions) is mother of Lyn (a winning swimmer), who is mother of Emily (another winner).  And you'd have to agree that blue eyed doll is the image of Emily.

Everyone wants to be photographed with blue eyed doll

February 2013: a morning race day

Our race co-ordinators put our names down for races: 50 metres, 100 metres, around the baths or the kilometre (around the baths is about 800 metres).

Electricity is off: so ice is brought in to cool the drinks.
A note about electricity: you don't notice it until you don't have it.  In the club room, our refrigerator, kettle and hot water (for washing up) are without power.  All three are sorely missed.  A borrowed generator provides just enough power for our laptop and printer - both necessities for co-ordinating the races.

Our club room, and much of the the park, has been without electricity for several weeks now, the problem being that the underground wiring has gone feral, the solution to which is in the hands of our local council and our electricity provider.

Sunscreen is always in the swimming bag...

...or should I say, swimming basket.
